DEARBORN – Mohamed Berro has officially announced his bid to seek one of the seven City Council seats in the city’s Municipality elections this year, making the race even more competitive for the Arab American community. Berro joins Attorneys Susan Dabaja and Tarek Baydoun as the third Arab American candidate vying for a position.
Berro, born and raised in Dearborn, retired from the Dearborn Police Department after 25 years of service in early February to focus on his run for City Council. During his time at the department, he worked in the patrol division and had a great hand in bringing cultural awareness and education into the department, being one of the few Arab American officers in the city. Berro educated his fellow officers during training seminars, familiarizing them with Arab customs and traditions to avoid communication barriers when they interacted with residents .

On numerous occasions, he would also take his cultural awareness training into police academies and other police departments through the state of Michigan. Berro also served as a D.A.R.E. officer in Dearborn, working to teach kids in the city’s schools about the awareness and resistance to drugs. When the late Mayor Guido was in office, Berro also served as a liaison officer to the community.
Berro says with his long history working in the city, it would be fitting for him to continue representing the community, as he would like to take his experience and knowledge into city hall.
“Now that I’m retired, I’m able to have some input in changing some things that I have seen. Some issues are major and some are minor. I always hear complaints from citizens about police related issues and traffic problems. Internal problems like pays being cut or even all the way down to the parking meters in west Dearborn that I’m not in favor of,” Berro said.
He is also says he wants to see Arab Americans increase their status within Dearborn’s city jobs.
“My goal is to represent every single resident in Dearborn through City Council, and I would like to see the number of Arab American involvement increase in other aspects within the city as well. They need more representation in the police and fire departments. I would like to see all races, ethnicities, and genders increase their status within the city,” Berro added.
Berro says he is looking forward to reaching out to more citizens during his campaign run. He is currently a planning a fundraiser sometime in late March or early April. For more information on his candidacy, visit his website at:
