DETROIT — A Bloomberg.com article highlighted the economic contributions of Arab refugees to the local economy.
The story published on Feb. 18 was titled, “Detroit’s Comeback Has an Arabic Accent.” It conveyed the personal stories of Iraqi refugees who are now working in the auto industry.
“At a time when Europe and many parts of the U.S. are divided about integrating refugees from the Middle East, Michigan is providing opportunities for immigrants from the war-torn region,” Jeff Green, the reporter, wrote. “The state and the city of Detroit have the U.S.’s highest concentration of residents with roots in that part of the world. The Detroit area’s Arabic community goes back a century.”
Green writes that established immigrants are helping newcomers fill essential manufacturing jobs.
The story includes a testimony from David Dyssegaard Kallick, director of the Immigration Research Initiative for the Fiscal Policy Institute in New York, who said Michigan’s refugee community is outperforming their native peers.
