DEARBORN — According to SmartAsset — a personal finance technology company in New York —Dearborn placed fifth for trick-or-treating out of 252 of the largest cities in the U.S.
The number of children under 15, the typical weather and crime rates played a role in rankings, according to SmartAsset.com, the company’s website. Dearborn tied with Longmont, CO at fifth, while Nampa, Idaho ranked first.
“Western and Midwestern cities rank well,” the website specifies. “Most of the cities that appear on the top of our list are located in these two regions.”
According to the company, the best temperature for trick-or-treating is 60 degrees. This year, the National Weather Service estimates a high temperature of 57 degrees in Dearborn.
The website explains that the ranking is also determined by the “percentage of kids under age 15 in each city and the number of single-family homes per square mile”, since additional homes mean an increased chance of residents passing out candy. It also recognizes the Halloween activities offered to children in Dearborn like the Greenfield Village’s annual event and the Dearborn Historical Museum’s annual party.
Other influences involved home values and crime rates.
Dearborn’s property crime rates decreased since last year, while the average home value increased by approximately 26.4 percent, as shown on the website.
The company gives personal financial advice on student loans, home purchases, retirement savings, credit cards, banking and more.
