DETROIT — The October 2011 auction of tax foreclosed properties has been completed and Wayne County Treasurer Raymond J. Wojtowicz has reported sales generated over $22 million. The revenue will support ongoing essential government services. “The last thing I want to do is sell someone’s property. However if a taxpayer cannot or will not pay their taxes I am required by state law to sell the property at auction,” Wojtowicz explained. “The increase in activity in the auction this year should assist in the stabilization of our neighborhoods.”
Over 6,000 parcels of property were sold with Michigan residents being responsible for over 93% of the revenue generated. Only 1% of properties were purchased by people from outside the United States. The number of properties sold in the auction represents an increase of 46% over last year’s record-setting auction and the 22 million dollars in sales represents an 85% increase when compared to the 2010 results.
