DEARBORN – A standoff between police and a gunman who held a man hostage in his home for several hours Tuesday night ended Wednesday morning with the victim suffering only minor injuries.
Crowds gathered and police blocked off streets late Tuesday in a primarily Arab American neighborhood near the north side of the Miller Road and Warren Avenue intersection during a residential hostage situation.
Authorities said police were called to a home on the 7500 block of Manor Street after a husband and wife came home to a burglary in progress and called 911.
Bilal Chami, a bystander among a crowd that gathered near the scene said he witnessed police arresting two males who allegedly attempted to burglarize a home on Manor Street, and that a third alleged burglar remained in the home, holding a resident hostage.
“I seen one of the cops pull a huge rifle out on one of the guys,” said a resident of the neighborhood who identified himself only as Mahmoud. “He was running around and they caught him.”
Other bystanders said they also saw police with guns drawn. Some said they were prevented from getting to their home by police because the area was too dangerous and “the situation is bad.”
Police confirmed Wednesday that two suspects were arrested early on and a third held a male homeowner hostage for several hours before the victim escaped and third alleged burglar surrendered.
A SWAT unit was called to the scene.
The Detroit News reported Wednesday that SWAT team officers were forced to jump from the second floor of the home to escape a fire. The report also states that at one point, there was a fight between the victim and the homeowner.
