Butterball, the largest turkey producer in the United States, said it has a shortage of fresh large turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving.

The company said that turkeys at some of its farms failed to gain weight this year, causing the shortage, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“We experienced a decline in weight gains on some of our farms causing a limited availability of large, fresh turkeys,” Stephanie Llorente, a spokeswoman for Butterball, said in a statement. “While we are continuing to evaluate all potential causes, we are working to remedy the issue. We sincerely regret the inconvenience that some of our customers have experienced as a result of this issue.”

Butterball, which produces about 20 percent of turkeys consumed in the United States, said that it has an ample supply of large frozen turkeys that will be available for Thanksgiving.
