DETROIT— Turkia Mullin’s brother, Dr. Hussein Awada is facing federal charges of dealing prescription drugs from his Warren medical practice, and conspiracy to commit health care fraud. Turkia Mullin attracted media attention for her involvement in the Wayne County Severance Scandal more than one year ago.

On Wednesday Dr. Awada was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond after he was arraigned on the charges in federal court. Dr. Awada works out of the Midwest Family Practice on 12 mile and Warren. His passport was taken away, in order to prevent him from attempting to flee the country.  He is facing allegations of performing unnecessary medical procedures, and defrauding Medicare out of millions of dollars. 

There are also claims that he wrote prescriptions for people, who didn’t have legitimate medical conditions in exchange for cash. The tactic reportedly earned him an additional $50,000 a month. 

He is also accused of billing the government for treatments performed on dead patients.  There are reports Dr. Awada shipped a container of cash overseas to Lebanon, and spent some of the money on his office building in Warren.
