DETROIT — Andrew G. Arena, the current FBI Special Agent in Charge who was born in Dearborn and raised in Detroit, was named the Detroit Crime Commission’s Executive Director on April 4, 2012.

Arena was designated assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Division by then Director Louis J. Freeh on March 22, 2001. In this position, he oversaw the counter-terrorism and counterintelligence programs. Following the 9/11 attacks, Arena was promoted to chief of the International Terrorism Operations Section at FBI Headquarters.
The following year, he was appointed special assistant to the executive Assistant Director for counter-terrorism and counterintelligence and assigned to the Director’s office. In February 2004, Director Robert S. Mueller, III promoted Arena to the position of Special Agent in Charge of the New York Division. Arena was in charge of all criminal investigations in the New York office. In March 2007, Arena assumed the position of special agent in charge of the Detroit Division. He has worked with local Arab American community members and has been a regular part of the BRIDGES meetings between law enforcement and leaders.
A non-government agency, the Detroit Crime Commission acts as an intermediary between citizens and law enforcement to help initiate investigations and act as an advocate on behalf of citizens and public safety. The purpose of the Detroit Crime Commission is to lessen the burdens of government by facilitating the prosecution of criminal activity through research, investigations, dissemination of information, coordination of activities between business, government and law enforcement, and through making grants to fund law enforcement activity.
