DEARBORN — The second of two bone marrow drives for local women was held on Sunday, March 25 at Greenfield Manor, with more than 600 people turning out to ‘Be the Match’ in honor of Hanya Alwerfalli, who is fighting acute leukemia and is in need of a transplant. Her sister Hebah Alwerfalli said that the family was thankful for the turnout and that the crowd included many ethnic people from different cities, along with the help of many volunteers.

Last Wednesday, a similar drive was held in honor of Amal Fawaz, who also needs a transplant. Those who got the quick swab on both days to see if they are a match will be entered in the national registry.

Hebah Alwerfalli also said she wanted to stress that the transplant procedure does not involve actual bones but instead it is a type of fluid that is needed to give to cancer patients who are a match.
