Mohammad Sohail initially pulled out his rifle when a man tried to rob his Long Island convenience store while carrying a baseball bat.
When he asked the hooded man, who pleaded for his life while on his knees, why he was resorting to crime, the would-be robber said he had no other way to feed his children.
Sohail gave him $40, and a loaf of bread before sending the man on his way.
“First of all I would like to say I am sorry at the time I had [no] money no food on the table no job and nothing for my family,” the letter read, according to the New York Post.
“Now I have a new child and good job, make good money, staying out of trouble and taking care of my family. You gave me forty dollars, thank you for sparing my life. Because of that you changed my life.”
