DEARBORN — Two men who attacked City Councilman Mike Sareini and his 66-year-old mother in March are facing two counts each of assault and battery. They are set to appear in court on Aug. 4 before Judge Mark Somers in the 19th District Court in a pretrial settlement conference.

The conference will result in either a deal with Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office or a decision to take the case to trial.

Local businessmen Hasan Hamzeh Abbas and Albert Mohamed Abbas attacked Sareini and his mother, former longtime City Councilwoman Suzanne Sareini, on March 13 after attending the funeral service of former Fordson High School Principal Imad Fadlallah at the Islamic Institute of Knowledge.

Sareini said he knows the men, as they had asked for his help before, but he doesn’t bend the rules.

“I’ve helped these people in the past and they were very happy,” he told The AANews in March. “When I couldn’t help them because they had to go through a certain process… they didn’t respect that. They felt that I should be able to do whatever they wanted and it doesn’t work like that.”

He’d noticed the men at the funeral, so he wanted to leave before they could cause any trouble inside the mosque. After services and prayers had concluded, Hasan Abbas confronted and pushed him.

Sareini said he then told his wife and mother that they had to leave right away.

The men were waiting at the front door of the mosque and followed Sareini, his wife and mother to their car.

“They approached the car and my Mom had her window open,” Sareini said.

Police said Albert Abbas then threw a water bottle that hit Suzanne Sareini and Hasan Abbas punched Mike Sareini in the face.

The attackers alleged that he’d pulled a gun on them, but police searched and found nothing.
